Through Time and Wilderness

Through Time and Wilderness Book

Here is a story of following old and new trails of the American West, with an eye towards the future.

"It was easy to imagine the excited thoughts and exclamations of the crowd - in Chinese, Japanese, Indian, German, French, Dutch, Spanish, English and many other tongues - bouncing and ricocheting off the canyon walls, through the many side canyons and ravines, to eventually rest somewhere in the great chasm. The Grand Canyon takes them all in, and perhaps they settle like small rocks in the Colorado and its tributaries, to be rolled, worked and tumbled. Polished memories. Some day, I hoped to descend to the bottom, and feel the stones."

When Doug Alderson was perusing several old family scrapbooks, one worn leather-bound volume drew his interest - maps, photos, sketches, brochures and humorous commentary from his grandparents' 1939 "trip thru the Golden West." Highlights included Pike's Peak, the Painted Desert, Petrified Forest, Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Zion, Sequoia, Yosemite and Yellowstone.

Alderson set out to retrace his grandparents' route with a burning question: are the panoramic landscapes of the West, especially those found in carefully protected national parks, as relevant and captivating today as they were in 1939?
